NREGA circulars

Right to food e-learning course

Produced by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the UN, this free online course provides an introduction to the right to adequate food. The principles and concept of this right are presented using concrete examples and scenarios. The course also provides an overview of the historical development of this right. The course consists of four lessons, each of approximately 30 to 45 minutes duration. Each lesson has a set of learning objectives, interactive step-by-step instructions and exercises.

Assessing and managing social performance in microfinance

Many microfinance institutions (MFIs) have a `double bottom line’: They work toward both a social mission and financial sustainability. This publication, produced with inputs from `Improving the Impact of Microfinance on Poverty’, a three-year action-research programme working with 30 rural finance institutions in 20 countries, and Cécile Lapenu of the Comité d’Echanges, de Réflexion et d’Information sur les Systèmes d’Epargne-crédit (CERISE), details several tools that evaluate how an MFI translates their social mission into practice, encouraging a transition from one-off impact assessments to the continuous monitoring of social performance.

Incorporating gender into your NGO

Published by www.networklearning.org, this manual aims to help non-government organisations (NGOs) and community based organisations (CBOs) to put gender into all aspects of the organisation and thus ensure gender mainstreaming within the organisation and in its activities. It explains the concepts and definitions of gender, followed by ‘what to do and how to do it’, both within and outside any organisation. It describes the several steps in the process of ‘engendering’ an organisation, from analysis of the organisation, development of an action plan, implementation and then monitoring and evaluation. Guide to using the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2005

Viewing the RTI Act as a mean of allowing citizens to participate in governance, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) has brought out simple user’s guides in English and Hindi to explain how laypersons can use the act. The guides explain:

  • authorities covered by RTI
  • information accessible under the act
  • how information can be accessed
  • what you can do if you are not given the information you want
  • how you can ensure the act is implemented effectively
The guides provide several examples of how people and organisations have used the RTI to change the status quo. The guides also provide formats for making applications.

Participatory monitoring: guidelines for practitioners in the fight against human trafficking

A publication of an International Labour Organisation project to combat trafficking in children and women provides guidelines to monitor the progress of the project toward its objectives, and to capture the dynamics of trafficking in the targeted sites. The guidelines consist of three parts:

  • a theoretical framework for participatory monitoring
  • a kit with eight different tools to be used to collect data
  • annexes with tips on how to run training workshops and analyse baseline data.
The guidelines and tools were developed with a view to involving all key stakeholders, including government officials, partner organisations, families and children at risk of trafficking as well as project staff.

Working with men on gender: trainer's manual

This manual, developed by Sahayog, over a series of workshops involving four other organisations, is a resource for facilitators who work with different groups of men on issues of gender, sexuality and health. The manual covers six modules that can be used as a series of workshops. The six modules cover: equity and equality, gender, sexuality, health, violence, facilitation skills.
